  The Carrie Ann Story

Dear Carrie Ann was a victim of a puppy mill that had been abandoned by the owner.  Poor Carrie Ann had been left alone with no food or water.  She had lived for years in a place too small to move, giving birth to litter after litter of puppies while her bones and teeth became robbed of calcium, her limbs became malformed and her teeth fell out.  She was estimated to be approximately 9 years old by our vet.  When we first brought Carrie Ann into the ARFanage she was emaciated, could barely walk and had only two teeth in her mouth.  Even though she had lived an obvious life of abuse and neglect, she retained her sweet spirit.

The kennel workers would have to nearly drag her out of her kennel each morning and evening to go outside to potty.  She would go out, but would immediately want back in to eat and lay down in her kennel.  She was so pitiful and although many of us feared she would never find a real home we were glad she was at least in a place where people cared and took proper care of her.

A few months into her stay in her new surroundings at ARF, a new volunteer named Amanda came along.  Amanda is a local artist and has an amazingly huge heart.  She had been volunteering at the ARFanage for several weeks and relaying her stories about the many animals there to her Mom, Becky.  Becky was in the market for a pet and decided ARF was the perfect spot to shop since her daughter was so involved.  When Becky arrived at the ARFanage, she was immediately drawn to Carrie Ann’s kennel.  It broke her heart to hear the sad story of Carrie Ann’s life and made the decision to bring Carrie Ann to her home and let her live out the remainder of her days in the lap of luxury.  We all believed Carrie Ann probably had little time left - she seemed so broken and worn.

To our surprise, Carrie Ann has fooled us all!  She is running around like a young dog now with her new friend, Girl, who is Amanda's brother's dog, also a rescue.  Girl was found wandering the streets in pitiful condition.  Amanda’s brother took Girl in and provided her a loving home.  These two dogs are inseparable now.  Amanda tell us that if they have to be separated from one another, neither will eat and they pine away for each other.

Becky says that Carrie Ann is a precious gift to her entire family and that they all love her dearly.

If you look closely at the pictures you’ll see that Carrie Ann seems to have a perpetual smile on her face these days.  Happy tale, happy volunteers!!

These are the stories ARF volunteers love to hear and that make everything we do at ARF worth while!!
